Philip Roth is a well - known American Jewish writer who gets more and more attention either at home or abroad. He began to gain a high reputation because of his first short story anthology Goodbye, Columbus published in 1959. And The Conversion of the Jew is one from the anthology. The comments on the short story mainly focus on its Jewish ness, the author's counter to his culture, etc. However, this paper tries to interpret it using the myth- archetypal eritieism; which can let us know Roth' s deep care to his own culture under the surface of counter.
