The article attempts to explain the religious and social background of the jade burton figurines from a Han tomb at Liangquan in Baoji based upon the geology of the cemetery, contemporary rulership of upper class, and regional tradition of sacrificial practices. The authors propose that the figurines might serve as sacrificial and ritual paraphernalia during the Qin and Han periods. Furthermore, the owner should be a diviner who was able to communicate with heaven and spirit instead of a commaoner.
