"The Story of an Hour" is one of the most famous and controversial short stories written by Kate Chopin. This paper presents a dialogue with two prestigious scholars Susan Sniader Lanser and Dan Shen, who hold contrastive arguments on the interpretation of this short story. Lanser argues that "The Story of an Hour" is an exemplary feminist work, while Shen points out the various ironies and conservative attitude implied in this story. Different from both of them, this paper holds that Chopin employs aptly the various narrative strategies to achieve a balance between feminist, moral, economic and aesthetic concerns, thus producing a feminist spectre with a conservative moral mask.
