Carved white pottery, as well as its making technology, ware shape, and the octagon decorative pattern, originated from the Zaoshixiaceng, an agricultural cultural form in Pingyuan, Liyang. It became, however, a major ritual ware category with spiritual connotations continuously used by the mountain people for over two thousand years after its adoption by the Gaomiao, a mountain cultural form. Mountain people used white potteries to express their brief. They also created graphs composed with elements from both mountains and plains. The custom to use white pottery ritual ware with carved patters was widely applied in both Lingnan and Lingbei with the moving of mountain hunters and became an indicator of a broad cultural system.
