摘要
《威尼斯商人》中既可恨又可怜的夏洛克形象,不仅顺应了伊丽莎白时期观众对犹太人的偏见,还能够引起人们对宗教改革过程中经历过的种种宗教压迫和无奈进行反思。夏洛克父女最终都皈依基督教,反映了伊丽莎白时期天主教徒改信新教的选择,反射出英国在宗教问题上的倡导。由于改信新教与英国民族国家身份认同息息相关,而灵魂救赎问题却一时难以解决,这给伊丽莎白时期的改宗者带来焦虑。《威尼斯商人》为这种焦虑提供了一个隐蔽的发泄出口。
Shylock is described by Shakespeare in The Merchant of Venice as an object for the audience to show hatred as well as sympathy,which corresponds with Elizabethan people's stereotype upon Jews and arouses their reflection on religious persecution during Religious Reformation.The conversion of Shylock and his daughter to Christianity embodies Catholics conversion to Protestants and complies with the religious climate in Elizabethan age.For these people,an anxiety over salvation is caused by conversion from Catholics to Protestants and quest of English national identity.Shakespeare offers a hidden opening for them to express this anxiety.
