On account of the separation of church and state in the U.S., religion always maintains a special relationship with the nation as a whole and with each individual. Absorbing both the sacred and the secular elements, American religious faith manifests some features of civil religion, whose relationship with individual and society has drawn close attention from American literature for a long time. Through chronicling four generations’ different life experiences in the 20 th century, John Updike’s novel In the Beauty of the Lilies dramatizes the decline of orthodox Christianity, the distortion of patrioticized religion, the cult of cinematic religion as well as their respective influences on personal life and the whole country, exemplifying the distinctive and significant role civil religion has played in American society and individual’s life.
