After the founding of New China, as political tensions in the Far East grew, Britain was forced to impose strict trade controls on China under the United States’ pressures. This policy had done great harm to British interests. Taking the opportunity of the meeting between the Chinese and British leaders at the Geneva conference in 1954, Britain set up the official and semi-official channels of trade with China and promoted the resumption and development of the non-governmental channels of trade with China. The rapid development of multi-channel trade had laid a foundation for the British government to adjust its trade control policy towards China.
