From a physiological perspective, sleep is a way for humans to restore energy, while from a literary perspective,it is used as a representation of the human spiritual world. Both Haruki Murakami’s After Dark and Banana Yoshimoto’s Asleep describe the protagonist’s sleep. In these two novels, sleep is regarded as a space isolated from reality and a means of escaping from reality.Sleep and the dreams that accompany sleep are also regarded as surreal means of communication. At the same time,as a closed space isolated from the outside world, sleep space also presents a sense of occlusion and loneliness. These are closely related to the highly developed urban society of contemporary Japan,as well as the lonely and closed mental state of people in the city.
