Critics have been interpreting William Blake’ s poetry collection Songs of Innocence and of Experience from various perspectives, through which Blake not only probes deeply into the inner side of human world but also the religious and philosophical issues. In this essay, via analysing the meanings of the recurrent lamb image in Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience within the concerns regarding the "symbolic metaphor" in Western Romanticist poetry, the author intended to figure out how Blake uses the image of lamb as a vehicle to touch upon humanity and society. For Blake, the image of lamb acts as not only a messenger from the world of innocence and purity, but also a medium to understand the world of experience.
