The selection of “civilized city” is an important form of “ecological championship”, which is an important measure to promote the construction of ecological civilization, and it is of great significance to promote the high-quality development of cities. Based on the DDF-Global Malmquist-Luenberger index analysis method, this paper measures the green total factor productivity of 243 cities in China from 2003 to 2019, and uses the “civilized city” selection, a quasi-natural experiment, to explore the impact of selection on green total factor productivity, and further analysis of its impact path through the heterogeneous timing DID model. The research results show that the selection of “civilized city” is conducive to improving the green total factor productivity of the city. The research conclusions are still robust and reliable after a series of tests. The larger the city scale, the higher the city level, the richer the non-resource-based city and the urban educational resources, the more obvious the driving effect of the selection of “civilized city”. Innovation effect, structural effect and reversal effect are the main ways for the selection of “civilized city” to drive green total factor productivity.
