闵福德《鹿鼎记》英译本的译者行为批评分析

Analysis of Translator Behavior Criticism in the English Version of The Deer and the Caul-dron by Minford

作为中国文学的一种特殊类型,武侠小说以武功、侠义和江湖为背景,塑造了一批性格各异、行事作风独特的江湖大侠形象,传达了如侠义精神、忠诚、道德等核心价值观,逐渐形成了中华文化中不可磨灭的独特符号。《鹿鼎记》作为金庸先生笔下的一部长篇武侠小说,且基于本书主角韦小宝以不学无术的市井小人物形象登场,最终却立下千秋功业,乃是区别于一般意义上“侠”的存在;且书中囊括众多市井人物语言、江湖人物称呼以及历史朝代的知识,无一不在证明其英译本研究价值。本文基于周领顺教授提出的“求真–务实”连续统评价模式,从“翻译外”角度研究影响译者行为的社会制因,并从“翻译内”视角分析译者在对《鹿鼎记》进行英译活动时采取的具体翻译策略、方法及技巧,探究译者对“求真”与“务实”两个翻译倾向所做出的抉择倾向,并为未来外国汉学家英译中国武侠小说提供实例佐证。

As a distinct genre of Chinese literature, Martial arts novels depict a collection of martial arts heroes with various personalities and distinctive behavioral patterns against a backdrop of martial arts, chivalry, and the martial arts world. They communicate fundamental virtues like chivalry, loyalty, and morality, ultimately becoming an iconic and distinctive emblem in Chinese society. The Deer and the Cauldron, a lengthy martial arts novel by Mr. Jin Yong, is centered on the protagonist Wei Xiaobao’s portrayal as an ignoramus and an inexperienced figure of the street that finally succeeds greatly. He is not the same character as how “Xia” (chivalrous expert) is often characterized. The book also contains a ton of street jargon, names of martial arts legends, and historical dynasty in-formation, all of which demonstrate the study usefulness of its English translation. Based on the “Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining” continuum mode of evaluation proposed by Professor Zhou Lingshun, this study examines the social factors that influence translator behavior from the per-spective of external translation, and analyzes the specific translation strategies, methods, and tech-niques adopted by translators in translating The Deer and the Cauldron from the perspective of in-ternal translation. Additionally, it examines the translator’s preferences for “Truth-seeking” and “Utility-attaining” in translation and offers examples and guidance for upcoming foreign sinologists who plan to translate Chinese martial arts books into English.
