In his white beard,surrounded by piles of books,an astute expression on his face,his right hand gesturing as if making a point:in the photo I have before me,Yang Mingzhao looks like the very image of the archetypal,old-school Chinese scholar.Born in 1909 to a family of scholar-physicians,Yang became a towering literary figure,whose contributions to the 20 th century revival of interest in the Wen Xin Diao Long cannot be underestimated.
