Analyzing the Relationship between Two Ancient Chinese Characters “ning(寍)” and “ning(寧)”

研究古文字,往往可以凭其演变过程,推测中国文化的变迁,鉴古追今。在古文字时期,文字形体尚未定型,不同字形的字可能含有相似或相同的字义。"寍""寧"在古文字时期并在,二字同音,却在形构上有些微差异,"寍"少了一个"丂"部件。分析"丂"对"寧"的表意作用,探讨"寍""寧"在字形及语用上的特点,有助于考究二字的意义,也可知二者是"部分异体字"的关系。

Investigating the changes of ancient Chinese characters can speculate the development of Chinese culture and foresee the future.In the time of ancient Chinese characters,the appearances of characters were not fixed,and different characters might have similar or identical meanings.The words"ning(寍)"and"ning(寧)"both existed in the time of ancient Chinese characters."Ning(寍)"and"ning(寧)"sounded the same,but they are different in shape—"ning(寧)"had one more consisting part"丂"compared with"ning(寍)".Analyzing the ideographic function of"丂"to"ning(寧)"and exploring different features in shapes and pragmatics of"ning(寍)"and"ning(寧)"help to find out their meanings and understand the partial variant relationship between the two characters.
