Investigating College English Teachers’ Needs for English for Academic Purposes

摘要 目前国内对于将学术英语纳入大学英语课程体系有诸多讨论,但是多数研究基于学生需求、学科发展和国家战略视角,而在一定程度上忽视了广大英语教师对学术英语的认知和态度。本研究通过问卷和访谈调查了210名大学英语教师的学术英语需求,即他们对学术英语的认知、从事学术英语学习和教学的意愿。数据统计结果显示,多数英语教师认为学术英语应成为大学英语教学的主体内容之一,认可学术英语对教师和学生的积极作用,研学学术英语意愿强烈,但参与学术英语教学的意愿不足。本文对大学英语教师发展提出了相关建议。 There has been considerable discussion on whether English for Academic Purposes(EAP)should be included in College English syllabus in China.However,most studies have approached this issue from the needs of students,requirements of discipline development and state strategies,ignoring the voices of College English teachers,who play an important role in this campaign.This study has investigated the needs of College English teachers for EAP.A total of 210 English teachers were asked to state their conceptions of EAP as well as their willingness to study or teach EAP with a questionnaire survey and a follow-up interview.The results reveal that the majority of College English teachers regard EAP as one of the important components in College English syllabus,acknowledge its positive effects on teachers and students,and express a willingness to learn about EAP but a hesitation to be engaged in EAP teaching.This study offers suggestions for the development of College English teachers.
