A Comparison of Qian Zhongshu’s Metaphor Thesis and Conceptual Metaphor Theory

钱钟书的隐喻学说与概念隐喻理论可以对比,其比较理由有二:一是钱钟书晚年曾数次征引《我们赖以生存的隐喻》;二是钱钟书的隐喻学说有着潜在的系统性。二者存在以下的相通之处:都注意到设譬和用词中的规律性;都为隐喻性表达寻求认知上的理据解释;都进行跨语言、跨文化的隐喻比较;都注意到文学与哲学中隐喻的共性。除此之外,它们也有不少区别。对钱钟书的隐喻学说与概念隐喻理论的异同进行梳理,有助于我们加深对隐喻现象的理解和对钱钟书的治学成就的认识。

There are two reasons to compare Qian Zhongshu’s metaphor thesis and conceptual metaphor theory(CMT).First,Qian cited Metaphors We Live By for several times in his old age.Second,Qian’s metaphor study has implicit systematicity.There are many similarities between them:both pay attention to the regular patterns among metaphorical expressions;both try to give motivated explanation for metaphor;both compare metaphors from different languages and cultures;both point out the fact there are many shared metaphors between literature and philosophy.Yet there are also many differences.It will deepen our understanding of the phenomena of metaphor and lead to an acute evaluation of the heritage of Qian by clarifying these similarities and differences.
