In the communication between different cultures, the first problem one faces is the translation equivalence between the names of people and places. When translating the names of people in different cultures, the common method that almost all languages adopt is a transliteration from the source language to the target language according to the pronunciation of the names of the target languages, which simply requires an approximation in pronunciation. But it is not applicable in Chinese.Because of the influence of the traditional mentality in Chinese culture, the Chinese people tend to give a foreigner a Chinese surname, which gives people the illusion that he/she is a Chinese. This way of dealing with the translating of surnames is commonly adopted in Taiwan,China. But in China’s mainland, people tend to foreignize foreigner’s surnames.
