For quite some time,literary studies in the Anglo-American world have welcomed transnational,interdisciplinary,and intermedia approaches,which will remain the trend for years to come.Taking advantage of his multicultural background,Professor Qian Zhaoming has innovatively trailblazed a new field in modernist studies by illuminating the cross-cultural and inter-artistic relations between American modern poetry and Asian cultures,particularly Chinese culture:from his early studies on Pound’s and Williams’s engagement with Chinese poetry and culture to the mid-career projects on Pound’s,Stevens’s,and Moore’s response to Chinese arts,to the recent studies on the impact of Asian cultures and arts on late Modernism.This trajectory of achievements has brought far-reaching impact on the ways that the scholars and readers worldwide reevaluate modernist poetry,just as Edward Said trailblazed the new field of Orientalism in the late 1970s and Ezra Pound“reinvented”Chinese poetry at the turn of the 20th century,by showcasing how to tell behind-the-scene“Chinese stories”in Western literature.In the interview,Professor Qian not only traced his path of development as a professor and a scholar and explained the significance of his research program,but he also shared his experiences of success.
