Although a member of the American elite society,Edith Wharton, the American female writer, surprisingly chooses to create the novel Summer.Rooted in the social, cultural and historical backgrounds at that time, combined with theories from feminist theorists such as Charlotte Gilman,Kate Millet and Ruth Rosen, the paper tries to analyze Summer from the angles of the economic woes faced by the American women at the turn of the 20 th century,Wharton’s writing of their strong desires and efforts to escape poverty, and the lack of options for women of the lower class to better their financial circumstances as reflected in the novel.Summer looks squarely at the economic predicament of American women of the lower class in the early 20 th century, and urges American society to deeply reflect upon its origins. The problems reflected in the novel are still relevant for U.S.and the rest of the world in the 21 st century.
