试论哥伦比亚大学东亚图书馆藏《新编对相四言》的视觉结构及图文叙事

《新编对相四言》是中国传统蒙学书籍中杂字类识字课本,是古代人民学习的重要资料,也是当今人们了解中国古代教育的重要资料。本文通过概述美国哥伦比亚大学东亚图书馆藏《新编对相四言》的研究成果,探讨其影响、左图右文的视觉结构和图像与文字的展现,分析《新编对相四言》的视觉结构及图文叙事方式。本文通过研究《新编对相四言》的全书版式编排,分析其视觉结构,发现编者有意地进行空间营造及图文布局,图形构成与文字排列有内在的关系秩序,编撰上的巧妙构思体现了空间布局的"经营位置"和已现雏形的格律设计;在图文叙事方面,用直观的图像表达抽象的文本概念,以便观者能够准确把握字词概念,利用留白作为图像表意的巧妙手段,引出由观想而生的虚白世界,帮助转化抽象的文字概念。

Hsin-pien tui-hsiang szǔ-yen is a miscellaneous character literacy textbook in traditional Chinese elementary schools.It is not only an important teaching material for ancient people,but also an important material for today’s people to know about.This paper summarizes the research results of Hsin-pien tui-hsiang szǔ-yen collected by the East Asia Librar y of Columbia University in the United States,discusses its inf luence,the visual structure of the left picture coupled with the right text,and the display of images and words,and analyzes the visual structure and graphic narrative mode of Hsin-pien tui-hsiang szǔ-yen.By studying the layout of the whole book and analyzing its visual structure,it is found that the editor intentionally creates the space and graphic layout as presented.There is an internal relationship between graphic composition and arrangement.The ingenious compilation ref lects the management position of spatial layout and the embryonic form of metrical design.In the aspect of graphic narration,it uses vivid images to illustrate abstract and concepts so that the viewers can accurately grasp the concept of words,and use blank as a clever means of graphic expression to lead to the virtual white world generated by visualization,which helps to bring out the concepts in the abstract text.
