Arthur Upham Pope was the most famous Persian art historian in the United States and even in the Western world.He was also the pioneer of Iranian art and art history research in the 20th century.Pope wrote many books throughout his life and made outstanding contributions to the study of Persian art and art history in the West.Pope’s early philosophy teaching career and carpets exhibition business enlightened his understandings of art,and laid a professional foundation for his later research,promotion,collection and exhibition business on Persian art.Pope’s trip to Iran in 1925 was an important turning point in his academic career.With the support from the Iranian government,academia,and business circles,Pope successfully planned and organized many exhibitions and international conferences,established the Asia Institute,and published A Survey of Persian Art:from Prehistoric Times to the Present,which not only promoted the revival and inheritance of Persian national art in Iran,but also effectively promoted the popularization of Persian Art in the Western world.This paper first sorts out Arthur Upham Pope’s artistic career,and then summarizes and discusses his achievements and contributions,aiming to dig into pope’s important position in the research field of Persian art history and the practical value of his artistic thoughts,which is of significance to the study of Persian Art History in China as a academic supplement.
