As a unique artwork for export in the context of trade between China and the West in the 18th and 19th centuries, export paintings were mainly made by Chinese painters to cater to the Western interests, imitate the Western painting techniques and styles, and meet the needs of sponsors and markets. They provided precious image records for us to observe and study the society in the Qing dynasty. This paper comprehensively applies the theories and methods of sociology, philology, and iconology to analyze the artistic value and style characteristics of the export paintings of "life etiquette and customs" in the Qing dynasty. It further discusses the folk connotation of this type of paintings and attempts to explore the views on Chinese and Western folk customs underneath the export paintings of "life etiquette and customs".
