Studies on the art activities of Lu Xun primarily focus on the New Woodcut Movement and the Leftist Art Movement of the 1930 s in China, but in fact, Lu Xun had been involved in Western art for some time before that, and had begun to introduce Western art to China in the late 1920 s. This paper studies the translated version of the Japanese book, A Survey of Modern Art History, which was written by Itagaki Takao, a Japanese art historian, and translated into Chinese by Lu Xun in 1928. In view of the acceptance of Western art theories by Chinese artists and intellectuals in the 1920 s, the paper examines the content of this translated book, the art theories it includes, its spread route, and its translation and introduction process by Lu Xun. With the analysis of Lu Xun’s letters, diaries and collection of books, the paper also studies Lu Xun’s attitude towards Western art and his perspective on the introduction of Western art at that time.
