This essay analyzes the transnational exchange between Russian and English literature between roughly 1860 and 2016 to measure the impact of Russian writing upon British modernism and the reverse.Drawing on Dostoevsky,Tolstoy and Chekhov,it traces their influence on Virginia Woolf,Katherine Mansfield and others by asking a series of questions:What was the appeal of this literature to English writers?What was the role of translation in its emergence?How did Diaghilev’s Ballet Russe contribute to this development?Why did Turgenev repeatedly visit London?Why did H.G.Wells visit Gorky in St.Petersburg?What is the mission of literature as understood by the Russians and the English?Texts by Chernyshevsky,Plekhanov,Trotsky and Gorky will be offset by work from Woolf.Nabokov and Stoppard in outlining the literary historiography of these two literatures in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Virginia Woolf summarized the indisputable importance of Russian authors for English writers when she wrote that Russian books have "become an indestructible part of the furniture of our rooms,as they belong for good to the furniture of our minds."
