On jiù’s Function as a Topical Focus Operator

"就"有一种话题焦点算子的用法,给其前话题授予强[焦点]的特征,并要求评述部分回指语篇前文;且话题身上的焦点特征投射为全句的语力义。相比一般对比话题句,"就"句有所不同:前者常伴随评述中出现对比焦点,后者却不欢迎这种焦点。"就"的上述功能内涵在话题的量化特征、评述的回指形式上,有系统的体现。

The adverb jiù"就"can function as a topical focus operator,which assigns the feature[focus]to the topic,and simultaneously requires that the comment contains an anaphor referring back to something in the preceding discourse.Moreover,the focus feature in the topic will project into the whole clause due to its illocutionary force.Compared with ordinary contrastive topic clauses,the jiùclause are different in that,while the former often co-occur with a contrastive focus in the comment,the latter bans such a focus.The above mentioned function of jiùis reflected systematically in the topic’s quantificational features and the anaphoric forms in the comment.
