This study explores word stress misplacement in English multi-syllabic verbs with inflectional affixes of"-ing"and"-ed"in the oral reading of Chinese college English majors. The findings indicate that improper assignment of word stress is quite common among English majors, and most students mistakenly shifted the word stress of English multisyllabic verbs to the last but one syllable. The causes of word stress misplacement are identified in relation to the discrepancy between the phonological systems of Chinese and English, the influence of Chinese word stress modes and the noun cognates of corresponding English verbs.
