Based on the analysis of two lacquer boxes with horned animal patterns unearthed from tomb No.1 of Beishantou in Chaohu city,Anhui Province, this paper holds that the decorative themes of these boxes originate from the prevailing horned animal patterns in the early nomadic cultures of Eurasian grasslands, while the composition and details of the decorative patterns inherit the decorative art of the lacquerware of the State of Chu.In addition, the two lacquer boxes may be produced by agencies of Shu County,Guanghan County or the central authorities, and passed on to the tomb owner through royal rewards or gifts.
