Paul Gilroy is a famous British black theorist and a key figure in introducing race study into cultural studies.Though Gilroy is a member of the Birmingham School and under great influence of cultural studies,he sharply criticizes the ethnocentrism in British cultural studies in his works.He thinks thatin the early British cultural studiesthe scholars were restricted to the analytical framework of a single ethnic group,race and nation,and had ignored the influence of black people upon British culture and history.Taking Raymond Williams and E.P.Thompson,the founders of British cultural studies,as examples,he points out that British New Left failed to regard race as an important independent dimension in their discussions about race,thus failed to effectively analyze race problems.
