Xuanzang玄奘,in his last years, translated the Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra(Large Perfection of Wisdom Sutra)into Chinese.Despite its great significance, few studied the development and spread of the text.By investigating the process of the translation, the spread of the text of the sutra, and the changing status of the sutra in the Buddhist Tripitaka catalogue, this article provides a few insights on questions relating to this sutra.First, several Buddhist pieces of literature composed in the Tang Dynasty that recorded the Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra had taken reference to each other.Second, concerning whether the prefaces of Taizong太宗,Gaozong高宗and Xuanze玄則were included, the development of the text can be concluded into three phases.Third,Zhisheng智昇’s designed Buddhist Tripitaka catalogue influenced later monks and Buddhist scholars to treat Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra as the supreme sutra. The development of the spread of the Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra epitomizes the formation and development of the Chinese Buddhist canon.
