A Rational Approach to Cross-Straits Relations Lies in the “1992 Consensus”

1992年两岸两会在香港地区会谈中达成的共识是两岸关系的突破性进展。“九二共识”最大限度地体现了海峡两岸求同存异的精神,创造性地区分了“一个中国原则”与“一个中国涵义”。“九二共识”的核心是坚持一个中国原则,也就是认同“内地与台湾地区同属一个中国”。“九二共识”是推进两岸关系和平发展的政治基础。国民党放弃“九二共识”将走向没落,民进党承认“九二共识”才能走出困局。

In 1992,high-level cross-Straits talks were held in Hong Kong region.The consensus reached the talks was a breakthrough in cross-Straits relations,known as the“1992 Consensus.”The“1992 Consensus”maximized the spirit of finding common ground while reserving differences and creatively distinguished between the“one-China principle”and the“one-China connotation.”A core element of the“1992 Consensus”is adhering to the one-China principle,which states that“both Chinese mainland and Taiwan region belong to one China.”The“1992 Consensus”lays the political foundation for promoting peaceful cross-Straits relations.Neither the GMD nor the DPP can escape their predicament if they abandon the“1992 Consensus.”
