Since its establishment in Taipei in 1899,the Bank of Taiwan(BOT)has continuously expanded its power to neighboring south China. With the promotion of business,in 1906,the BOT began to plan to set up a business office in Shanghai in an attempt to further expand its power to East China and the Yangtze River Basin. However, the plan was unexpectedly met with strong opposition from the Japanese Ministry of the Treasury.Until 1911,due to the severe sugar surplus crisis in Taiwan, the Shanghai branch was finally established under Taiwan’s region sugar export opportunities in the Chinese mainland.By exploring the twists and turns of the establishment of the Shanghai Branch,we can find that it was deeply influenced by many factors, such as the“division of labor”guideline of Japan’s national policy banks and Japan’s expansion policy of“advancing north and defending south”in East Asia. The establishment of the Shanghai branch became a major turning point in the process of financial aggression of the BOT to the Chinese mainland.
