A Discussion of Lan Dingyuan’s Thought on the Governance of Taiwan region

闽南漳浦人蓝鼎元曾随族兄蓝廷珍出师入台。虽然时间仅一年多,但由于其熟悉台湾地区局势与闽南粤东形势,加上许多台湾地区人先辈就是由闽南特别是由漳州各县移往台湾地区的,故蓝鼎元能深谙台湾地区百姓的心理,了解他们的诉求,因而能提出一系列具有针对性、有效性的治台思想,具有当时较先进的海洋观,并指导后来的实践,产生了良好的效果。蓝鼎元实无愧“筹台宗匠”的美誉。

Lan Dingyuan,a native of Zhangpu,southern Fujian,once went to Taiwan region with his clan brother Lan Tingzhen.Although he was in Taiwan region for only more than a year or so,he was familiar with the situation in Taiwan region and the situation in southern Fujian and eastern Guangdong.As many Taiwan region people’s ancestors had moved to Taiwan region from southern Fujian,especially from the counties of Zhangzhou to Taiwan region,Lan Dingyuan was able to understand the mental outlook of the Taiwan region people and their demands.He was then able to put forward a series of targeted and effective strategies to govern Taiwan region and had a more advanced concept of the sea at that time.He guided the subsequent practice,which produced good results.Lan Dingyuan truly deserved his reputation as the“master of governing Taiwan”.
