The Development of Chinese Mainland Merchants in Taiwan Region during the Dutch Occupation Period

荷据时期中国内地商人在台湾地区的发展经历了两个阶段,早期是因跨海贸易有些大商人移往台湾地区;1640年大员转口贸易衰退后,长期在岛内经营的另一批商人接踵而起。这些中国内地商人在台湾地区的经营涉及商业贸易、土地投资和收税承包等领域。伴随着大批闽南移民进入台湾地区,这些商人“头家”扮演着组织者和领导者的角色。同时,又把两岸贸易与海外贸易结合起来,海峡两岸的商业网络得到进一步扩展和增强。中国内地商人在台湾地区的活动逐步蚕食了荷兰人的殖民利益,导致在台闽南人社会迅速成长,台湾地区社会的内附趋势越来越明显。

The development of Chinese mainland merchants in the Taiwan region during the Dutch occupation period went through two stages.In the early period,it was some big merchants who moved to the Taiwan region by cross-strait trade;in 1640,another group of businessmen who had long operated on the island rose to power due to the decline of the bulk re-export trade.These Chinese mainland merchants did business in Taiwan region in areas such as commercial trade,land investment,and tax collection and contracting.Later,as more southern Fujian immigrants entered Taiwan Region,these merchant“Cabecilla”(toujia)not only played the role of organizers and leaders but also combined cross-strait trade with overseas trade,further expanding and strengthening the business networks across the Strait.In addition,the activities of Chinese mainland merchants in the Taiwan region gradually eroded the colonial interests of the Dutch and led to a rapid embrace and growth of the southern Fujianese community there.Thereafter,the tendency of pro-Chinese-mainland attachment in the local society became increasingly evident.
