摘要 Holmes Welch(1924-1981),who was a Sinologist at Harvard University, conducted comprehensive and in-depth studies on the Buddhist revival in modern China through detailed historical data and formed distinctive academic views that recognized the conventional Buddhist system and questioned the Buddhist reform movement advocated by reformative monks. This paper reviews Welch’s research context on Buddhist revival, integrates the views of other scholars, and points out the problems of Welch’s study regarding subjective guidance of oral information, the lack of study on Buddhist thought, and the lack of consciousness of Buddhist modernity.
