Hsüan-tsang(Xuanzang玄奘),whose secular family name was Ch’ên(Chen陈)and original personal name,I(Yi祎),was a native of Kou-shih District(Goushi Xian缑氏县)of Lo-chou(Luozhou洛州)in Honan(Henan河南)Province(in the present southern part of the Yen-shih Yanshi偃师District in Honan Province).Both his great grandfather and grandfather were government officials,but his father,Ch’ên Hui(Chen Hui陈慧),devoted himself to the study of Confucian teachings and did not serve in the government.
