Fa-hsien(?-420 A.D.)whose secular surname was Kung(龔),was a native of Wu-yang(武陽,present Hsiang ch’iu襄坵district in Shansi province)in the prefecture of P’ing-yang(平陽).He had two brothers,and as they died prematurely,his parents fearing that he might also die young,sent him to become a?rāma?era when he was three years old.He used to suffer from serious illness whenever he happened to be at home,but as soon as he was sent to the monastery his disease would be no more.Thus he seldom went back home.After the death of his parents.
