19世纪,沙俄对高加索的征服是沙俄帝国对外扩张中的重要步骤,正是在这个时期,沙俄的侵略扩张史才以文学的形式保存了下来。莱蒙托夫是继普希金之后创作高加索战争文学作品的又一位重要作家,《当代英雄》是他唯一的小说。在《当代英雄》中,作者把高加索设置成沉默的背景,并从俄国欧化知识分子的视角和俄国普通大众的视角建构了高加索的形象。这种单线叙述在单方面建构高加索形象的同时传达了俄国征服高加索合理性的帝国意识。
