There has been controversy as to whether the expression α εαν θελητε in Galatians 5:17 d refers to the desire of the flesh,the desire of the Holy Spirit,or both.This article argues that the context of Galatians indicates that α εαν θελητε points to physical desires,because this interpretation fits with the theme of Paul’s writing of Galatians:exhorting Galatian Christians not to accept circumcision.Although the views of other scholars have their merits,they have not comprehensively considered the subject of the letter,hence being problematic.
