In his What is a Theory of Meaning(I &II),Michael Dummett imposes a methodological constraint on establishing a theory of meaning:any theory of meaning needs not only to define the meaning of expressions of a particular language but also to manifest our knowledge of the meaning in question. We respectively call them "definition requirement"and "manifestation requirement".This paper attempts to,from this methodological point of view, examine Davidson’s truth-conditional meaning theory,Dummett’s "verification-circumstance"meaning theory and Brandom’s inferential semantics, showing the fact that the"manifestation requirement"increasingly gains its theoretical import.
