This paper investigates diaries and poems written by zheng xiaoxu during his Janpanese Diplomatic period in Qing Dunasty and analyzes the configuration of his early views of Japan, but also offers a perspective to explore Zheng’s early attitudes towards reformation, democracy and monarchy, which can provide some clues for his later transition. In an era of constant change,Zheng was continuously learning new knowledge in a foreign land. However, compared with his peers,he lacked interest in exploring the new era.The mental situation of a traditional intellectual was still the most significant harbor where he could anchor.
