Chenwei(Divination)was a prevailing theological trend of thought in the Han Dynasty. It greatly influenced the study of Confucian classics, and often used by various factions of political forces. It once became the official ruling ideology, but later it was feared by the dynastic rulers,so the relevant writings have been repeatedly banned.By the Sui and Tang Dynasties, most of them had been lost. However, after Chenwei was introduced into Japan,Not only has it been well preserved, but its ideological content has been applied to politics. On the basis of reviewing China’s Chenwei and the construction of imperial power, this paper discusses the role played by thoughts of Chenwei in the construction of Japan’s ancient imperial state and its influence on the later generations through the interpretation of relevant Tenno’s(emperor)records in the Six National Histories of Japan.
