This paper focuses on the scene of the interior of Tomo no Toshio’s residence. It shows through iconographic analysis that the various objects inside the mansion can be read as indicating that the lifestyle of the occupants transgressed Buddhist precepts for living in multiple ways. The saké server and cups and other items inside the mansion are motifs also found in Buddhist paintings that specifically depict the consequences of transgression such as Rokudō-e( paintings of the Six Realms) and Nikabyakudōzu( paintings of "Two Rivers and the White Path"). It therefore seems clear that part of the intention behind the creation of the Ban Dainagonemaki was to communicate the Buddhist concept of cause and effect.
