The St.Bartholomew's Massacre in 1572 had a wide international impact.News about the event crossed political boundaries and quickly reached England through types of news, political commentary, diplomatic correspondence and stories from Huguenot refugees.Under the complex religious and political situation of the Elizabethan period, the massacre sparked antipathy and alarm against France and Catholicism in England, reinforcing the anti-Catholic sentiment of the late Tudor period. In the aftermath of the massacre, the English public became more concerned about the security of the state and the monarch, demanded a strict suppression of Catholic forces at home and a tough approach to relations with France. The Elizabethan government's calm reaction to realpolitik did not match this expectation and led to widespread discontent and criticism.
