1923年和1927年华人足球队先后两次访问澳大利亚,澳大利亚报刊对此给予了关注并作了较多报道。这些报道包括对华人足球队的称赞,对比赛情况的客观介绍,赛场外对华人的观察,对华人足球队访问的警惕及批评,通过比赛进行自我反思等。这些新闻报道中的华人形象基本上是正面的,在澳大利亚"白澳政策"当道和"黄祸"论流行的背景下,这种形象似乎成了华人形象中的一种例外。主要原因在于访澳的华人足球队员具有较高的素质,与在澳大利亚充当"苦力"的华人形成了鲜明对比。而且澳大利亚媒体对代表了英国文化的"协会足球"的反感,从某种程度减轻了对华人足球队的种族歧视。但总的来说,澳大利亚人眼中的华人形象在整体上并没有因为这两次足球队访澳而有所改观。

In 1923 and 1927,Chinese football team visited Australia twice.The Australian newspapers paid attention to it and made comprehensive reports.These reports included praise to the Chinese football team,objective introduction to the game situation,observation of the Chinese outside the stadium,vigilance and criticism of the Chinese football team’s visit,and self-reflection through the competition.The Chinese image in these news reports is basically positive which seems to be an exception in the context of the prevalence of Australia’s"White Australia Policy"and"Yellow Peril"theory.The main reason is that the Chinese football players visiting Australia had a high quality and were in stark contrast to the Chinese who were acting as"coolies"in Australia.Moreover,the Australian media’s resentment against the"association football"that represented British culture had somewhat reduced the racial discrimination against the Chinese football team.But in general,the image of the Chinese in the eyes of Australians has not changed as a whole because of these two football tours.
