Social media has penetrated into people’s daily life in an all-round way.Previous studies mostly focused on how users adopt and use a social platform, but paid less attention to the situation that specific user groups“do not use”a social media.Based on the semi-structured interviews with many young adults, this study explores the negative use of WeChat circle of friends. It is found that users tend to repeatedly examine themselves before expression, resulting in social fatigue and then choose to quit because of the combined effect of audience accessibility, interaction possibility“imagination”of self-expression and persistent impression maintenance pressure. Most of discontinuous users tend to move to the social media with strong relationship gathering, which is mainly composed of peer groups, and enjoy the security of small audience stage. The seemingly negative discontinuous use itself becomes the path for them to seek self-identity,improve social quality, and transform into an ideal adult, which has the exploration significance of self-identity confirmation.
