This article provides a systematic investigation and introduction of the extraordinary experience of Yi-shan Yi-ning,a high-ranking Chan-master of the LinjiSchool in Mount Putuo,who was sent to Japan on a mission by the Yuan Dynasty court,and with the support of the Japanese shogunate and imperial court,he propagated Buddha-dhamma in Kamakura and Kyoto.His contributions and status in the cultural exchange between China and Japan will also be evaluated.
