On Conrad’s Literary Identity and Influence from His Letters

作为生长在波兰的英国作家,康拉德通过“他者”的眼光来观察欧洲世界,并致力于消解欧洲中心主义,因而康拉德的文学身份被爱德华·萨义德定义为东方作家。其实,康拉德文学创作更多的是从伦理角度出发,将其定义为“伦理作家”更为恰当。来自世界各地的许多作家都坦承自己的文学创作受了康拉德的影响,而且影响的形式具有多样性。他们不仅借用康拉德的写作方法,而且把康拉德作品作为自己文学作品的背景,甚至于把康拉德的生活经历作为写作题材。

As a British writer who grew up in Poland,Conrad observed the European world through the perspective of the“Other”and was committed to dispelling Eurocentrism.Therefore,Conrad’s literary identity was defined by Edward Said as an Eastern writer.In fact,Conrad’s literary creation is more from an ethical perspective,and it is more appropriate to define him as an“ethical writer”.Many writers from around the world acknowledge that their literary creations were influenced by Conrad,and the forms of influence are diverse.They not only borrowed Conrad’s writing methods,but also used Conrad’s works as the background for their literary works,and even used Conrad’s life experiences as writing themes.
