Morrison's Song of Solomon depicts three kinds of relationships between things and people. The characterization,Macon“whitened”by the pursuit of profit, cut off the love of fellow relatives,is a“successful loser”.Guitar blinded by hatred, taking the lives of innocent people at will, reduced to a tool of revenge.Ruth is overly dependent on her late fatber's thing, and ends up being enslaved by it.To achieve a balanced state of things and self,Pilate is not like Macon who gives up himself for profit. She uses her spiritual strength to make up for the lack of material reality;although she commemorates her dead father and the past with earrings, she is not enslaved to things like Ruth.Milkman is also influenced by a healthier way of looking at the relationship between things and people and fnding himself.
