Postwar Japanese films have significantly influenced the Japanese-British Nobel Prize laureate Kazuo Ishiguro’s writings. While scholars have mentioned the connection between Ishiguro’s novels and cinema, they have not critically examined the interrelation between the two media, nor does it become a main focus among the Ishiguro studies. This essay attempts to fill this gap by offering proof that has been recently found in the unpublished Kazuo Ishiguro papers housed in the Harry Ransom Center at The University of Texas at Austin.By answering questions of how Ishiguro uses the relation between film and fiction as a media to convey ideas related to"gong’an"fiction, ghost story, and"mono no aware"that have distinctively East Asian roots, this essay sets ground for future transmedia studies on fiction and film.
