Construction Path and Theoretical Significance of George Steiner’s“Translator”Model

《巴别塔之后——语言与翻译面面观》是当代文学批评家乔治·斯坦纳关于语言与翻译研究的重要著作,被学界誉为诠释学译学研究的代表作。书中翻译研究与诠释学的互相影响不仅在于诠释学理论提出“翻译四步”的方法价值,也在于“译者”诠释模型所体现出的翻译对现代诠释学的范式意义。本文立足于《巴别塔之后》与诠释学理论的对位阅读,从理论来源、假设提出、意义观三个方面溯源“译者”模型的建构路径,从而透视“译者”模型在理解主体、诠释运动、诠释任务三个层面的理论意义。

After Babel:Aspects of language and translation is an important work on language and translation presented by contemporary literary critic George Steiner.It has been widely recognized by scholars as a seminal work of translation studies that employs hermeneutic approaches.The mutual influence between translation studies and hermeneutics in this work lies not only in the methodological value of hermeneutics embodied in“four steps of translation”,but also in the“translator”as a hermeneutic model which underscores the paradigmatic significance of translation to modern hermeneutics.Based on a contrapuntal reading of After Babel vis⁃à⁃vis modern hermeneutics works,this paper investigates the reasons for the construction of the“translator”model from three aspects,theoretical sources,hypothesizing,and perspectives on meaning,to uncover its theoretical significance in relation to understanding subject,hermeneutic motion,and hermeneutic task.
