In the colonial context of“Black Peril”,the growth of Mary Turner,the protagonist of Doris Lessing’s novel The Grass Is Singing,has been greatly affected.For instance,in her childhood,the one-sided ethnic education and insufficient communication caused her racial prejudice,which resulted in her morbid psychology;and after her death,no one dug into the cause while the relationship between she and Moses became a local scandal.From the silent“other”receiving education passively to the dead censured in the neighborhood,Mary passed away tragically,which can reflect the negative impacts of racist discourse represented by“Black Peril”on white women.
